This investigative feature uncovers the history of Out There, a locally produced 1990s cable access variety show that spotlighted Kansas City’s queer communities during the height of the AIDS crisis and “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Drawing on archival footage, interviews, and deep research, I bring to light a pivotal piece of regional queer media history and the people who made it happen.
“Thanks for doing such extensive work on these pieces, Nas! It’s always super interesting diving into these community stories!”
