{B/qKC}‘s popular education series continued on July 17th, 2025 at BLK + BRWN. bookstore.

We interrogated and defined what third places look like for us, how gay spaces have been and continue to be under threat, and what we need to build anew in Kansas City.

Workshop Description

This popular education workshop explores the complex history of third spaces in Black/queer life in Kansas City––examining how the former Black gay bar, Soakie’s, was shut down by the Power + Light development; and a larger conversation around our right to occupy, reclaim, and transform spaces that are constantly under threat. Attendees will engage in critical dialogue, hands-on exercises to connect these themes with their own experiences; and discuss what it means to create stable Black queer futurity in KC.
