Visiting Writers Program
2024
Literacy KC
On March 25th and April 1st, I had the opportunity to visit a class of adult learners studying for the HiSET–leading attendees through a two-part engagement I dubbed “cherished moments,” where about the importance of our memories and what it means to constantly voice our stories into the atmosphere.
The vulnerability and excitement everyone displayed in the room was incredible, and I am grateful I was able to instill in folks the praxis of {B/qKC} with folks I otherwise might not have met.
Course Description
In this two-part engagement, cherished moments, Montalvo will cooperatively engage learners in a discussion around objects, symbols, keepsakes and treasures that matter most to us––and how we can use the written word to keep the memories we associate with them alive. During class one, Montalvo hopes to begin with a discussion and facilitation around our memories: hearing from learners about important things they consider when sharing stories, and showing learners real world examples of how powerful sharing our memories can be. Through the end of class one and into class two, learners will write a short story about an object that is important to them––bringing the object to the class and engaging in group revisions.
