Conference and lodging support

In 2024, for my continued development as a journalist and Managing Editor for The Kansas City Defender, I attended the Investigative Reporters and Editors conference with the support of the Trans Journalists Association and TransLash Media.

“We’re excited to announce the TJA x IRE Fellows who will be attending the upcoming Investigative Reporters and Editors conference this month! Thanks to support from TransLash Media and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, we’re sending 11 reporters and editors to Anaheim for valuable training in investigative journalism, data reporting, and trans-specific coverage.”

Over the course of a few days, I was able to gain new skills in PDF parsing, fundraising, and supporting investigative projects in small newsrooms. Learn more >
I most recently used what I learned from this conference at my work with the Cultural Memory Lab to parse PDFs in my archive. Learn more >
As part of the fellowship, I contributed to TJA’s “Lightning Talks: Trans Stories Edition” by talking about my work finding {B/qKC} at a news organization. Learn more >

Each of these fellows was either an editor with a vision for doing more investigative work in their newsroom or a reporter with a track record of strong public records-driven work.
